Grid Signal Processor – §14a EnWG Configuration

Configure and monitor §14a EnWG compliance settings, controllable assets, and active grid limitations

Written by Tim Fremuth

Background

The Grid Signal Processor (GSP) enables compliance with the German regulation §14a EnWG by allowing the Energy Management System (EMS) to process and apply limitation commands received from the distribution system operator (DSO).

If the feature is available for a system, the Grid Signal Processor menu appears in the left-side navigation.

Accessing the Grid Signal Processor Settings

Open the desired system and navigate to Grid Signal Processor

The overview page displays:

  • Current §14a EnWG status

  • Consumption limitation status

  • Gateway Subject Key Identifier (SKI)

Configuration and activation settings can be accessed via the gear icon in the top-right corner of the Grid Signal Processor section.

Selecting the gear icon opens the Edit Grid Signal Processor Settings dialog.

Within this dialog, you can enable or disable §14a EnWG.

Once enabled:

  • The EMS considers limitation commands received from the DSO

  • Power consumption can be dynamically limited during grid control events

  • Additional limitation information becomes visible in the interface

  • The installation is compliant with §14a EnWG requirements

Marking Assets as §14a-Relevant

In addition to enabling §14a EnWG at system level, all controllable devices that fall under the regulation must also be marked individually.

Important:
Asset relevance is not configured within the Grid Signal Processor overview.

Instead, the setting is configured within the settings page of the respective device. To do this, open the settings for the relevant device and enable: “§14a Relevant”

Consumption Limitation Status

When §14a EnWG is enabled, the Grid Signal Processor overview displays the current consumption limitation status.

The following states are possible:

  • UNLIMITED: No active limitation is currently applied. The EMS operates without additional consumption restrictions.

  • x.x kW LIMITED: The controllable consumption of all §14a-relevant assets is currently limited to the displayed power value.

Failsafe mode

Failsafe mode is activated if communication between the Steuerbox / control unit and the gridBox is interrupted for more than 120 seconds.

In failsafe mode:

  • A predefined fallback limitation is applied

  • The fallback value is configured by the DSO or metering service operator (MSO)

  • The EMS continues operating in a compliant fallback state

Gateway Subject Key Identifier (SKI)

The Grid Signal Processor overview also displays the gateway’s Subject Key Identifier (SKI).

The SKI can be copied to the clipboard using the copy button next to the identifier.

This identifier is commonly required for:

  • Commissioning processes

  • DSO integration

  • Certificate verification

  • Gateway identification

Important

Ensure that the connected Steuerbox / control unit asset is configured with the type: “Unknown”

Incorrect asset typing may prevent proper limitation handling and communication behavior.
