This feature enables you to receive control signals from the grid operator, a higher control EMS etc., for example, during periods of grid overload. Based on the external control signals, the EMS will control the power consumption of the connected controllable assets at the level of the grid connection point temporarily, thereby operating in a grid-friendly manner. The integration and receiving of these control signals to the gridX system depends on the method used by the concerned party.

Technical description

This feature is particularly important for meeting differing policies and regulations across countries. In Germany, for example, this feature ensures that grid operators’ requirements are fulfilled by adhering to the VDE-AR-41XX standard norms for controlling assets in low and medium voltage networks. Multiple types of control signals can be used, such as a 1-bit signal from a radio-controlled relay, CLS proxy through a SMGW or a signal from a higher level EMS. The integration of these signals into the power system takes place in two steps. First, the gridX API converts DSO’s third-party API signals so that the EMS can recognize them. They can then be incorporated into the algorithm, allowing XENON to control assets via local control signals.

Depending on the chosen method of control signal integration, additional asset or cloud-to-cloud integration efforts might be required. Subscription to the API module might also be required for certain cases of control integration. The exact method and its implementation has to be discussed in detail with the gridX Solution Engineers to find a suitable solution.
