Before you start
Before you begin, make sure:
The P1 smart meter is physically installed and powered on by your distribution system operator
The P1 consumer interface is activated — contact your distribution system operator to confirm (see Additional Information)
You have an RJ12 adapter cable to connect the meter to the gateway's USB port
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Connect the meter to the gateway
The P1 smart meter connects directly to the gateway via USB, not via the network.
Connect the RJ12 end of the adapter cable to the P1 socket on the meter (typically on the right side)
Connect the USB end of the adapter cable to a USB port on the gateway
Close and lock all closable covers on the meter — this is required for the P1 port to function correctly on many models
2. Discover the meter in the commissioning wizard
The meter is now ready for the commissioning wizard. The P1 smart meter will be automatically detected and will appear in the commissioning wizard.
Additional Information
P1 consumer interface activation
The P1 port is considered a consumer interface and is not activated by default in many regions. Before commissioning, confirm with your distribution system operator or metering operator that the interface is enabled.
Depending on your region, activation can be requested via the operator's web portal or support helpdesk.
Security requirement: closing meter covers
Many P1 smart meters disable the P1 port when covers or access panels are open. If you experience connection issues, verify that all covers are properly closed and any locking mechanisms are engaged.
FAQ
Why isn't the meter appearing in the commissioning wizard?
Check that the RJ12 adapter cable is connected to the socket marked P1 (not S1) and that the USB end is connected to the gateway. Ensure all meter covers are closed and locked. Confirm with your metering operator that the P1 interface is activated. Restart the gateway and wait a few minutes.
How do I update the firmware of the meter?
The P1 smart meter firmware is managed by your distribution system operator or metering operator. Contact them for questions about meter firmware or functionality.
Which socket on the meter should I use?
Connect to the socket marked P1, which is typically the right-side RJ12 socket. Do not use the S1 socket.
How do I know if the P1 interface is activated?
If the meter is correctly wired but does not appear in the commissioning wizard, the P1 interface may not be activated. Contact your distribution system operator or metering operator to confirm the activation status.
Why do I need to close all meter covers?
Many P1 smart meters have a security feature that disables the P1 port when covers or access panels are open. Close and lock all parts before attempting to commission the meter.
