Before you start

Before you begin, make sure:

  • The inverter is physically installed and powered on

  • The inverter is updated to the latest software version

  • The SMA 360° app is installed on your device

  • You are logged in to the SMA 360° app with your SMA ID

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Connect the inverter to the network

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the inverter

  2. Verify the connection is established by checking the LED on the inverter or in the SMA 360° app

For network infrastructure requirements and troubleshooting, see Infrastructure requirements for the gateway.

2. Access the inverter settings

  1. Open the SMA 360° app

  2. Select the inverter in the app and scan the QR code of the inverter

  3. Access the settings with the password that has been created during the initial setup

3. Enable communication via Modbus

  1. Navigate to
    Device configurationType of communication

  2. Configure the following Modbus settings:

    • Modbus active: Yes

    • Port: 502

    • Unit ID: 3

    • Modbus SunSpec profile version: Standard

  3. Save the settings

4. Discover the inverter in the commissioning wizard

The inverter is now ready for the commissioning wizard. The gateway will scan the network to find available devices, which may take a few minutes. Once complete, the SMA inverter will appear on the results page.

When the inverter is detected, set the asset type to PV system from the dropdown.

FAQ

Why isn't the inverter appearing in the commissioning wizard?

Check that the inverter is connected via Ethernet and that Modbus TCP is enabled with unit ID set to 3. Restart the gateway and wait for the network scan to complete.

How do I update the firmware of the inverter?

Download the latest firmware from the SMA website and perform the update through the SMA 360° app.
For detailed update instructions, refer to the official SMA documentation.

Which SMA models are PV inverters?

This guide covers SMA Sunny Boy and Sunny Tripower series inverters (excluding Smart Energy and Storage models). These are PV-only inverters without battery management.

Why does my inverter not have an ethernet port?

Some SMA models require an additional communication module from the manufacturer for Ethernet connectivity. Check your inverter manual to confirm if an Ethernet port is available or if you need to order a communication module from SMA.

How do I configure the inverter without the SMA 360° app?

Depending on the model, the inverter's configuration can also be accessed directly at the inverter's web portal. Please refer to the manufacturer's manuals for detailed instructions.

What are the login credentials for the inverter settings?

The installer password is set during initial commissioning of the inverter. There is no factory default — you created the password the first time you accessed the inverter settings.

What if I have forgotten the installer password?

Perform a factory reset on the inverter to restore the original factory state. Refer to the manufacturer's documentation for reset instructions.
