Before you start
Before you begin, make sure:
The charging station is physically installed and powered on
You have the Mennekes configuration tool installed on a Windows computer
You have the official Mennekes USB cable
The charging station is updated to the latest software version
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Connect the charging station to the gateway
Connect the RS485 cable to terminals 7 (A), 8 (B), and 9 (GND) on the charging station
Connect the other end of the RS485 cable to the gateway's RS485 interface
2. Access the charging station settings
Connect to the charging station using the Mennekes configuration cable
Plug the cable into terminal 7 (Connection for the configuration cable) on the charging station
Launch the Mennekes configuration tool on your Windows computer
3. Enable communication via Modbus
The AMTRON Compact 2.0S requires DIP switch configuration to enable Modbus RTU communication.
Locate the DIP switch banks S1 and S2 inside the charging station (position 6 in the internal view)
Set the following DIP switches on Bank S1:
DIP switch 4:
ON(Modbus RTU)DIP switch 5:
ON(Satellite mode)
Power-cycle the charging station for the changes to take effect
The DIP switch positions and their effects can also be viewed in the Mennekes configuration tool.
4. Configure the Modbus address
The Mennekes AMTRON Compact 2.0S uses a fixed Modbus address of 50.
Navigate to:
SettingsVerify Modbus address is set to:
50Save the settings and restart
Due to the fixed Modbus address, it is not possible to install two Mennekes AMTRON Compact 2.0S devices on the same RS485 line. Installing multiple chargers on the same line will lead to communication errors.
5. Configure the fallback current
Navigate to:
SettingsConfigure the Fallback charging current according to the worst-case calculation of the site
Save the settings and restart
The fallback charging current is used when communication with the gateway fails. If you don't have a worst-case calculation for your site, set this value to 0.
6. Discover the charging station in the commissioning wizard
The charging station is now ready for the commissioning wizard. The gateway will scan the network to find available devices, which may take a few minutes. Once complete, the charging station will appear on the results page.
Additional Information
Phase switching capability
The AMTRON Compact 2.0S supports phase switching functionality.
To enable phase switching in the Mennekes configuration tool:
Set Method for charging in Sunshine and Sunshine+ mode to:
Dynamic phase changeSet Phase change pause to:
None
Only AMTRON Compact models in the 11 kW power class support phase switching functionality.
FAQ
Do I need an RS485-USB adapter for older gateways?
Gateways with serial number XXXX-200-XXX-XXX-XXX-P-X or XXXX-400-XXX-XXX-XXX-P-X require an RS485-USB adapter to connect to the charging station. Newer gateways have a built-in RS485 interface and only need the RS485 plug.
Why isn't the charging station appearing in the commissioning wizard?
Check that the RS485 cable is properly connected to terminals 7 (A), 8 (B), and 9 (GND) on the charging station and to the gateway's RS485 interface. Verify that DIP switches 4 and 5 on Bank S1 are set to ON and that the Modbus address is set to 50. Restart the gateway and wait for the RS485 scan to complete.
How do I update the firmware of the charging station?
You can perform the update through the Mennekes configuration tool. For detailed update instructions, refer to the official Mennekes documentation.
Can I install multiple AMTRON Compact 2.0S chargers on the same RS485 line?
No. Due to the fixed Modbus address (50), only one Mennekes AMTRON Compact 2.0S can be installed per RS485 line. Installing multiple chargers on the same line will cause communication conflicts.
Where do I find the configuration cable connection port?
The configuration cable connects to terminal 7 inside the charging station. Open the charging station housing to access the internal terminals. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for the exact location and connection procedure.
What DIP switches control Modbus RTU communication?
DIP switches 4 and 5 on Bank S1 control Modbus RTU communication:
DIP switch 4: Enables/disables Modbus RTU (must be ON)
DIP switch 5: Sets Master/Satellite mode (must be ON for Satellite mode when connecting to gateway)
What should I set as the fallback current?
Configure the fallback charging current according to the worst-case calculation of your installation site. This ensures safe operation when the gateway cannot control the charger. If you don't have a worst-case calculation or are unsure, set the value to 0 to disable charging during communication failures.
